Deep tissue is my favorite massage to give or receive. I have a regular client in Hollywood who gets a 2 to 3 hour deep tissue massage every month to control her fibromyalgai, often combining deep tissue with craniosacral to stop head pain. I don't recommend a 3 hour massage for most people, after an hour and a half to two hours most clients just can't take anymore deep work.
Combining two or more therapies is what several of my clients do for a longer massage. Combining a intense deep tissue massage followed by the relaxation of reflexology is a great combo that attacks the problem then sooths and relaxes through the feet. Deep tissue and craniosacral is another combo in big demand.
Deep tissue is its self a combo of either Swedish and a Rolfing style of massage or Russian Sports massage and the Pulverizer, using the lighter massage to warm up muscle tissues and gradually work into deeper, slower work on problem areas. This takes time and can only go as fast as you can relax using breathing and visualization to facilitate relaxation. It takes an hour and a half to work on the back neck and shoulders or the legs and psoas. As you receive more deep work your body learns how to relax and deep tissue becomes more enjoyable, the intensity being related to tension in the muscles and holding onto that tension. Most of my clients say an hour is to short and goes by in the blink of an eye, many have said that about the hour and a half as well.
